Being as young as he was, Toboe had little experience of what he thought of as romance and what Hige invariably termed 'babes', but he felt waves of emotion strike out from the epicentre of his heart when she smiled, and that was enough for him.

Simply put, Tala hated formal events and would normally do what she could to get out of one; once, however, when she had appeared at a dance in an elegant but too-tight green dress and with her normally untameable hair tied back in a chignon knot, Toboe's face had been priceless.
